Religion aside for a moment, there is a terrible addiction that has spread throughout the country and is one of the best kept secrets in the nation. Most everyone will tell you it’s a really bad thing, but nobody can seem to stop. And it’s not cheap, nearly sixty percent of us are in long-term debt because of it. No, we’re talking about alcohol, drugs or overeating. This is going shopping. And more than 15 million Americans may actually be addicted to it.

Rob VanAlkemade’s “What Would Jesus Buy?” is a moving documentary, irreverent and sober at the same time over the whole year destructive obsession shopaholic spinning a takeover of buying and spending spree for the Christmas season rolls around.

The film tracks the performance activist Reverend Billy and his motley caravan cross country, The Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir to bring the voice of reason a few years holiday season, compulsive consumers everywhere. The intent of this countdown for Christmas is to save the party from what has been called the Reverend Billy teased the Shopocalypse. Ironically, many of his group are injured when one of its buses collide on a road with a truck running to deliver the goods to the stores for Christmas. Meanwhile, the Reverend muses, “everyone in a car is driving to a TV.

The What Would Jesus Buy? project is the creation of Morgan Spurlock, the same as less spiritual frame of mind, lost his battle with junk food in the Ardennes against McDonald with his Oscar-nominated high calorie doc research, Super Size Me, and is now hitting the plexes with Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden.

The concerns of What Would Jesus Buy are broader than digestion problems, such as the Reverend Billy and his entourage made a clarion call to shopping addicts everywhere, to exorcise the demons of a variety of cash registers and credit cards because it encourages consumers to return to a more authentic relationship with Christmas.

  18. MMA Most Wanted – “What would Jesus Buy” is a great movie! Amazing! This is what our country desparately needs at this time, a wake up call! Amongst all this crazyness, Rev. Billy had some great logic! Buy American before our country is made overseas! Stop shopping at the big blue box and come home…. Saving money at the regist results in low wages, lack of respect and abuse by employeers on harworking employees!
