Every cosmologist and astronomer agrees: our universe is 13.7 billion years. Using cutting edge technology, scientists are now able to take a snapshot of the universe only a heartbeat after birth.

Armed with hypersensitivity satellites, astronomers look back in time to the moment of creation, when all matter in the universe exploded into existence. This is where we discovered an unsolved mystery as old as time itself – if the universe was born, where did it come from? Meet leading scientists who have discovered what they believe that the origin of our universe, and a window in the time before time.

Big Bang theory holds that the universe was once packed tightly in a small and incredibly dense space, known as a “singularity”. That is, until about 13.7 billion years, when a huge explosion of energy and the pressure began to give rise to entire worlds, galaxies and interstellar particles that form the universe as we know it today.

However, what caused the big bang? The physicists are left scratching their heads to that question. Since the universe began in a level so small, the laws of relativity are not fully implemented. In contrast, quantum theory, which deals with the world outside the law and the very small strange, must also be convened.

Successfully answering the question of what existed before the Big Bang would be necessary to close the gap between the worlds so far incompatible with each other, relativism and quantum mechanics. But even though the bridge has not yet been built, theories abound.

“Our universe may have either come into existence or collided with another universe,” theoretical physicist Michio Kaku said scienceline.org. “Big Bangs happen all the time.”

This is the fourth episode. See the list of all the episodes here: through the hole.

“prove the absence of a creator” is NOT how it works. I dont claim anything, i am just very sceptical to the claim made that “God exist” or “God MUST exist”. Whoever makes the claim also has the burden of proof. Its not up to me to disprove all (infinate) possibilities that could be real, its up to the claim-maker to prove or at the very least give good arguments for his or her claim that God exists or must exist and why all the other (infinate) other possibilities are false.

  2. deffan84 says:

You say “time and space are dimensions..” … i may agree. But that does not really explain *what* they fundamentally are.. If you claim that something can exist outside of this, you better understand what they REALLY are. Which we dont know. Ask any physicist. You cant just throw out claims like these and then have nothing to back up your claims with. Its amazing how people think they can bypass logic and reason and the need for evidence and claim “it must be so” because… you say so?

  3. deffan84 says:

lol, there is a BIG difference between proving a God and proving scientific theories like the big bang and evolution, which we have pretty solid information about. “God” however we have absolutely no information about except what is claimed by various people. But thats all we have – claims. Not even sure why you bring up String theory, which is not at all proved in any way. Perhaps you are confused about the term “theory” and how its used depending on the context?

  4. Prove evolution, the big bang, relativity or the absence of a creator in the universe…. Because based on what you said, if you cant do this, nobody has any reason to listen to you. Time and space are dimensions, a plane on which we live. There is another “theory” out there, called string theory. Where sub atomic particles are made up of strings which vibrate in the tenth dimension. The strings are everywhere and anywhere at once and hold all possibilities… sounds similar to a God, no?

  5. Lance says:

How can anyone possibly believe, that the universe and life were born of some random and cosmic accident?Do some random research, and decide for yourself, how it all began. The universe is in such precise order, that Stevie Wonder and a hyena in a coma, can see its no fluke. If the moon and sun were just a fraction off their current position, life on earth would be impossible. Imagine bein one of the first on earth, and sayin well this is nice, but i am thirsty,oh look!theirs some water! But i am hungry,oh look!theirs some food!I wish i had more apples,oh look!water is fallin from the sky!the next day the sunshines, you say,it seems the more it rains and the sunshines, the more trees appear.and on and on, Now do you get it???

  6. deffan84 says:

You are claiming to know that God exist, AND that he can exist outside of time and space. These are some bold claims. Prove to me that you first of all understand what time and space is, then demonstrate that something actually can exist outside of it. Please note that if you cant do this, nobody has any reason to listen to you. The only reasonable thing to say is “I dont know”. But you people never do this.

  7. 159tony says:

There could be a God. it is acceptable in a scientific perspective that something as a higher form than us (who live in a 3 dimensional world) is a 4 dimensional or higher form of life. a 4 dimensional creature would be able to see, know and to do anything, as far as i know at least. not quite sure though.

  8. shad455 says:

God wouldn’t need a “how” because the entire concept of creation, is, be, at, there, when, where, around, because of, in addition to, these all arise from the infinite that is God. God is the necessary factor in the trap of causality we look out from and imagine what if something caused this? Something did. That’s God. He can even talk RIGHT to you, or a tree, and not in a time/cause/effect way, you can’t figure it out because your entire mind and life is tied to cause and effect, that’s it.

  9. shad455 says:

The only thing I have to say is that it isn’t really illogical. If we’re to assume relativity, and the implications that all observers could easily see themselves as the center, then it’s true also that to be logical, and individual must take into account his own experience. If he is certain that in all other ways he functions in the rational world, and still has an experience he can’t necessarily explain to another in a scientific way, it doesn’t make his thoughts about it illogical. He sees it

  10. New matter isn’t being created, but it is being transformed, according to the Law of Conservation of Matter(Matter can neither be created nor destroyed, it can only change form) Stars are born, live, then die, and over time, fewer and fewer stars will exist until they all finally “burn out.” Matter will still exist, but it will be mostly black dwarfs, black holes, and dead planets. The reason the universe is expanding faster is thought to be dark matter, but we don’t understand it yet.

  11. I also believe that explanations of why were are here and how we got here are not as extraordinary that scientists want to believe. The same theory of “the best answer is usually the simplist answer” is highly overlooked. Something as amazing as how we got here doesn’t always have to be a series of unimaginable instances. There probably is a rather simple explanation but as humans we tend to over investigate things thinking there should be an amazing reason instead of simplicity.

  12. I think the secret to the big bang is in these super massive black holes. I believe there was never a singularity, but an infinate series of big bangs. These massive black holes that constantly consume matter, gas, galaxies an compress it with such intense gravity it creates the nuclear fission required to eventually become another big bang. This would also help to explain why the universe is so evenly spread out. Our latest big bang is 14 billion light years old expanding in the endless cosmos.

  13. There is no Time independent of existence. Time is rate of change. We, as creatures of Time cannot conceive of no Time, Whatever existed before it, always was. And that’s it.However we persist in asking the question. It leads to a lot of interesting progress, but there is no answer we can ever understand ,as we are creatures of Time.

  14. HumaneNation says:

Many people smarter then us grapple with the concept of faith brother. The whole concept of charity and values along with sin come from the bible. Sometimes we move away from the lesson and just try to follow the meaning but without understanding you’re like a fully loaded gun pointed at your soul. Read the whole book and then tell me what you think.

  15. Daymjo says:

Frankly I think this theory leaves just as much unexplained as the big bang singularity one. It says ok, the branes are pulled by this force and then they touch sometimes and the energy from the colission is turned into matter that fills the 3d spaces.. ok.. but then the force that attracts the branes must be both infinite, because it’s recurrent, AND finite because otherwise it would keep the branes united. So it’s like a reverse singularity..

  16. Im an athiest, therefor I say that some man created this “God”.But religion HAS server some VERY, VERY important purposes: civilization, laws etc.But they aren’t NEEDED anymore.Let’s say that religion NEVER existed, and some man NOW (in this time, this date) would say that there were some old, bearded man in the sky who created everything and that he “sees all and judges us all and is everything blah blah”…That person would be deemed as insane or just a troll.

  17. And when was this “God” created…?Who created him? Why?When?Oh, that’s right.God CREATED EVERYTHING (according to the Bible), and therefore… God must’ve created Himself.Cuz…. As you said, something had to create something…Someone had to create someone..

  18. I’m sorry for typing wrong.Explanation.There you go.2. (continue). And whilst I do not understand all of these scientific theories, I personally believe that they are more logical than some guy who has always existed just felt like creating everything.I do house respect for religion though, and I have read the bible. And I also just realised that I am currently only referring to Christianity as my chose of religion in this case. Whatever.

  19. Is it like that in whatever country you come from?I pity you. Here in Sweden (yes I’m a swede) we instead go for the most logical explenation. Here is 2 options:1. Some bearded guy created everything, when he said it. (even though there were no AIR OR MATTER for the sound (which is needed when you speak) to use as a medium. For sound is created when some energy goes into materia and creates vibration, which pushes air molecyles into your ear.)2. A logical explenation, approved by geniuses.

  20. joryvans says:

The belief in a deity is illogical and subjective, ie its based on FAITH (something I respect btw!)Science does not conflict with the belief in a god but it conflicts with religions. After all, the deity could have created the universe according to all the laws of science. All of science would still be true and the belief in a god would be intact. One should not prove/disprove a god via science faith is non-scientific.
