Project Nim - Can Apes Talk?

Humanity has been obsessed with apes for so many years now. The Darwin theory suggests humans descend from apes. And while that has never been proven, the theory has furthered fueled our desire to find out everything we can about apes.

Project Nim is a documentary showing one aspect of that obsession. The documentary follows the story of Herb Terrace, a professor who in 1970s tried to raise a baby chimp as a human child. It was all part of an experiment intended to break the language barrier between animals and people.

The chimpanzee Nim became the focus of a landmark experiment. The experiment tried to show that an ape could learn to communicate with language if raised and nurtured like a human child.

The documentary allows us to learn more about the true nature of apes. His extraordinary journey through human society and the impact he makes on people he meets along the way is a good way of understanding communication.
