The Story of Lord Buddha
The Buddha, the founder of the great religious philosophy of Buddhism, lived in northern India over 2500 years ago and was known as Siddhattha (Siddhartha = one, whose purpose has been achieved). Gautama (Sanskrit = Gautama) was his family name. His father, King Suddhodana, ruled over the land of the Sakya in Kapilavatthu on the border of Nepal. His queen was Mahamaya, a princess of the Koliya.

In a full moon day of May, when the trees were heavy with leaves, flowers and fruits, and man, birds and animals were in joyous mood, Queen Mahamaya was traveling in a state of Kapilavatthu Devadaha, father’s house, according to the custom of the time, to give birth to her son. But that was not going to be, for halfway between the two cities, in the forest of Lumbini, in the shade of a Sal tree in bloom, gave birth to a son.
Or Rummindei Lumbini, the name now known, is 100 miles north of Variinasi and in view of the Himalayas covered with snow. In this place where Prince Siddhartha memorable, the future Buddha was born, Emperor Asoka, 316 years after the event, erected a large stone pillar to mark the holy place. The inscription on the pillar consists of five lines of ninety-three Asoka (brahmi) characters, including the following occurs:
“Hida Sakyamuni Buddha jate,” “Here was born the Buddha, the sage of the Sakya. The column of the powerful yet been seen. The pillar,” as sharp as the day it was cut, “had been struck by lightning even when Hiuen Tsiang, the Chinese pilgrim, saw mid-seventh century AD. The discovery and identification of Lumbini Park in I896 is attributed to the renowned archaeologist, General Cunningham.
