The Secret Life of Chaos
Chaos theory has a bad name, conjuring up images of unpredictable weather, accidents and economic science has gone wrong. But there is a fascinating and hidden from the chaos, that scientists are only beginning to understand. It turns out that chaos theory answers a question that mankind has asked for millennia – How did we get here?
In this documentary, Professor Jim Al-Khalili is to discover one of the great mysteries of science – How does a world order begins as dust with intelligent life? How to get out of disorder? It is an amazing, counterintuitive and for many people a very troubling.
But Professor Al-Khalili reveals the science behind much of the beauty and structure in the natural world and discovers that, far from it magic or an act of God, in fact is an intrinsic part of the laws of physics . Surprisingly, it turns out that the mathematics of chaos can explain how and why the universe creates exquisite order and pattern. The best part is that one need not be a scientist to understand.
The natural world is full of impressive examples of how nature transforms the simplicity in complexity. From the trees to the clouds to humans – after seeing this film will never be able to see the world the same way again. To learn more about the secret life of chaos.

BBC please don’t block this in Canada and the USA. :’( I love it so much.
This docu had a deep impact on my life and my thinking, I would even say it was the best docu I ever watched in my life and I thank BBC for making it. It’s so sad that they blocked it on YT, but at least this clip is still availible. I started experimenting with the idea of video feedback loops, a concept I learned about in this docu and it’s good that I can at least show people where I got the inspiration from. I have some feedback loops uploaded in my channel and will add more in the future.
This programme brought all my thinking together, especially how mathematical rules can be applied to understanding the evolution of life. It’s simply the most thought provoking documentary I ever seen & a watershed in my understanding.
Me too, this program was a revelation for me
This poster demonstrates the Dunning Krueger Effect. Then they feel powerless in their life so they lash out at whatever far fetched construct they can subscribe to.
the brain makes patterns like this without dmt too. This is basically how all things work.
im a math major, but im not good at it. we learned about fractals, deterministic equations turning out to be chaotic, ODEs, lyaponov functions, and a whole bunch of stuff i dont remember,…sorry i cant help you gain more insight into this amazing subject.
what is your major? what are some of the aspects you covered in the course?
i took chaos theory; kicked my ass lol.
Just because the BBC is state run doesn’t mean every program they produce has an ulterior motive. You don’t understand politics if you think the government is in an underground bunker plotting against their citizens. Politicians just want to be successful and get rich, they aren’t super-villains. All that public broadcasting can do in a democracy is give a positive/negative spin in favour of the government, there’s way too much free media for “brainwashing”. They make intelligent programmes.
i know..i’ve been searching and I cant find the whole version either. The most amazing thing.
i just watched The Butterfly Effect!
ditto .. it annoys me that inspirational films such as this are witheld from the public over some stupid licensing law and a few £’s … stupid when compared with how far we have come, the amazement of the things we have been able to comprehend and deduce … urghh words can’t express how sick some aspects of the human condition make me feel .. why are we so troubled?

Thank you SO much for letting us know … a lot of ppl have been asking around about it on then net and it doesn’t help that the bbc don’t reference this kind of information on their webshite .. Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you
@TurkiyeCumhurbaskani It already has! Haven’t you watched the BBC news recently? In the UK though the people actually pay for their own indoctrintaion by something called the licence fee! Amazing! Hitler and Stalin would laugh themselves silly….
@DeathSlayer2 Wow you’re amazing aren’t you! The establishment must love people like you who have no interest in what’s going on around them or whether they are being governed by a bunch of fascists or communists. Presumeably this stems from your intake of BBC propaganda and sycophancy towards the BBC. Maybe you work for them? Just because you like science doesn’t mean you have to like paying for your own brainwashing you know……..
@DeathSlayer2 You have got to be joking surely?! The BBC is the UK version of State Controlled TV only paid for by the population for their own indoctrination. If you can’t see how biased and how much propaganda it pumps out you should take your rose tinted specs off………………
@Melki Well it all has to do with our ego. We want to think we understand and have control over everything when really we don’t. I’ve always thought there is no such thing as randomness just patterns we do not understand yet.
i’m so looking frrawod to see how September turns out! one of my favorite months of the year, because the Nashville weather starts to cool down + i can get back into making soups, stews + other fall-weather comfort foods. also, the NFL season starts back up, which makes my husband a happy guy (+ gives me more free time to catch up with girlfriends, ha!)amy @ fearless homemaker recently posted..
