The Mark of Cain documents the fading art form and the Russian criminal tattoos, once a taboo subject in Russia. The virtual disappearance is now seen as a reflection of the transition of Russian society in general. Filmed in some of the most notorious prisons in Russia, including the famous White Swan, interviews with prisoners, guards, and criminologists show the secret language of the area and the Code of Thieves.

Stalinist Gulag inmates, or the area, as it is called, has developed a complex social structure (documented in the decade of 1920) that incorporated highly symbolic tattooing as a mark of rank. The existence of these inmates in prisons and labor camps was considered by the state as a closely guarded secret.

In the 1990s, the population of Russia broke jail overcrowding among the worst in the world. Some estimates suggest that in the last generation of over thirty million of Russia’s inmates have had tattoos, but the process is illegal in Russian prisons.

The Mark of Cain discusses all aspects of tattooing, the mere creation of the tattoo ink, tattoo artists interviews and sobriety seen in the double-edged sword of tattoos in prison. In many ways, which is needed to survive brutal Russian prisons, but it makes the prisoner for life, which complicates any reentry into normal society they may have.

Tattoos expressly identifies the inmate has been convicted, like many prisons in the state s and what kind of criminal he is. Tattoos, in essence, will tell you everything you need to know about that person without even asking. Each tattoo represents a variety of things; domes of the churches represent the number of convictions a convict has epaulets on the shoulders tattooed represent the range of the person in the world of crime and so forth. The mark of Cain documents the fading art form and language Russian criminal tattoos, once a taboo subject in Russia. 1. There’s that Oil oligarch who tried to make a deal with Exxon mobile in their prison system too. I know he hasn’t been tried for anything and hasn’t received a sentence but he’s in there somewhere. That country is hardcore.

  2. How the rest of the world works? What does a documentary about Russian prisoners who openly tell you that they robbed and murdered people have to do with how the rest of the world works? Murder and robbery are crimes in all societies.

Does anyone know what the ”Girl with Nazi Symbols and Uniform” tattoo mean?I’ve seen a lot of theese in russian prisionersI’ve seen a lot, associating communism, URSS and commie political comissairs with Jews too… and jews are portrayed like devils and agentts of the communist state.

Дайте морковь на мула, он будет работать, пока он не голоден, и прекратить до получения другого. Хит мула палкой, и он будет работать до тех пор, как вы держите удар его словам, до изнеможения, и в конечном итоге, смерть.

  8. Yeah, prisons here and in the West are so welcoming for people that belong to this kind of world that they are happy to continue offending when they’re back out because in jail they feel at home. Plus they also use their time in prison to hone their “professional” skills and become better… at committing more crimes.

  9. simon1430 says:

Well that’s wrong, because some murderers have issues with anger management or whatever and such illnesses can be recovered by mental therapy. Anyway, with prisons like this, I’m not surprised that Russia has the biggest criminal rate around the world. Prisons are meant to make prisoners better people and healthy, not pigs or slaves. Although I love Russia, but I have to say this, Shame on Russia.

  10. simon1430 says:

Nope, but locking someone up in a prison like this and treat him miserably will not make him a good person, it will make him even worse. Here in the UK, Prisoners have library to read to learn about different aspects and recreate their minds, music studios to build their talents , swimming pools for exercising, in some prisons there are even science schools and literature schools and morality schools, because here we believe some that some murderers are mentally ill and need education.

  11. This is what US needs prisons that don’t allow GANGS.That have restrictions and guards that are NOT WOMEN and OVERWEIGHT RETARDS!not to mention MAKE them WORK.In US inmates do nothing but walk around, workout, and even have TVs and libraries.Prison MUST be a Prison, so it changes a person. So much taxes wasted on supporting these criminals in America. AND after they get out, they would not have LEARNED ANYTHING. And usually continue their crimes. in a sense Prison is better than home for them!

  12. simon1430 says:

Prisons shouldn’t be like this, here in UK our prisons are settled with Televisions and windows to let the sun shine comes in, desks and good beds.I’m proud my country has passed the eighties long time ago, and hopeful for Russia.

  13. ANTINUTZI says:

Sincerest Thanks for one of the most powerful, and profound documentaries I’ve ever been privileged to experience. What hauntingly poetic pain; brutal beauty. Director David Cronenberg’s critically acclaimed 2007 film “Eastern Promises” very accurately, and devastatingly dramatizes, explores and expands many of the very same psychosocial paradigms. My sincerest thanks again. Absolutely unforgettable.

  14. VieraBorn says:

Yea you have a good point. but thats just the most of what we see. We still have a lot of homeless illiterate and poor in our country which when you think about it makes no sense. Everyone shouldNT be rich but they shouldnt be suffering and i think they know that and it makes them savage. but yea my boyfriend who is Ukrainian said over there all they can do is Survive :/ so it is more bad ass over there

  15. blamedorger says:

Sad part is, they are the kings of the shortcut and the house wil probably collapse but one has to love their work ethic. Americans used to have the same work ethic until we became too good to sweat. Maybe we can get back to that. Also, DO NOT GET PUT IN A RUSSIAN GULAG!!!! THEY DO NOT FEED YOU!!!!

  16. blamedorger says:

People here have no clue how good we have it. My uncle did some missionary work in Mexico and you would not believe what one has to do there just to do a simple task like laying a patio. They literally have to do it by scratch including breaking the rocks into sand and making the glue to add to the water to make the cement. This has nothing to do with the video, I’m just sayin.

  17. TeeFunkable says:

Probably very true. Funnily, ten years ago I travelled to LA with a russian friend of mine. You should’ve seen his face when he heard the that some of the place we visited were considered “ghetto” when many of the people he knew would’ve quite literally killed for that standard of living..

  18. LivingDead53 says:

I meet a lot of people that avoid prison by going to the psych ward. It’s like impossible for me to go to prison. They just drug me up, which is worse, and lock me up. The worse I am, the more restricted my environment becomes.

  19. standupEFC says:

@ibeleaveinaliens My point was that in Russia the criminals are the good guys and the police are the bad guys mostly. Yes I agree not all American criminals are bad but a good 15% are evil. Also in Russia there isn’t a social welfare system, some areas are lawless. Although the police are very corrupt in America in Russia most trials are unfair. Although police withold information they usually have some evidence. In Russia they just arrest whoever they want to innocent or guilty.

  20. standupEFC says:

@tomfy1979 Same with America look at how many inmates get killed in America. Human rights isn’t something that is part of jail, prison wherever it is takes away peoples humanity. How do you think prison gangs always get hold of shanks and always have drugs in prison. Most Russian criminals are just people who commit crime to feed their families whereas in America they are just bad people. Russian women are forced into prostitution American women choose to.
