The Drug Trial That Went Wrong
‘The Drug Trial That Went Wrong’ depicts the story of Ryan Wilson, a 20 year old trainee plumber, who nearly died in the trial.
When Ryan was brought out of a two-and-a-half week coma he was told he had suffered permanent damage to his hands and feet during his fight for life, and had to have his toes surgically removed. His mother recounts that his whole body had swollen up and he looked dreadful.
The Government’s medicines watchdog said that the incident was the result of “an unpredicted biological action” but Deer digs deeper and obtains confidential papers relating to the development of the drug, the way the trial was conducted and the initial treatment Ryan received; he travelled to Germany and the US to track down and meet head-on with those responsible for the trial.
He pieces together an understanding of what went wrong and wonders whether what happened to Ryan is a warning for the rest of the mankind given the search for new drugs is moving away from chemistry towards biotechnology.
