The Cove opens in Taiji, Japan, where the former dolphin trainer Ric O’Barry has come to fix things after a long search for redemption. In the 1960s, was O’Barry who captured and trained dolphins at 5 he played the title character on TV Flipper international sensation.  However, his close relationship with the dolphins – the dolphins themselves causing a global fascination with trained marine mammals continues to this day – O’Barry led to a radical change of heart. One fateful day, a broken heart Barry realized that these very sensitive, highly intelligent creatures and self-conscious as well adapted to life in the open sea should not be subjected to human bondage again. This mission has led him to Taiji, a town that seems to be dedicated to the wonders and mysteries of the dolphins and elegant, playful and whales that swim on their shores.

However, in a remote cove, bright, surrounded by barbed wire and “Keep Out” signs, there is a dark reality. It is here, under cover of night, the fishermen of Taiji, driven by an industry of entertainment dolphins billions of dollars and a market overlapped tainted dolphin meat mercury, participate in a hunt invisible. The nature of what they do is so shocking – and the consequences are so dangerous to human health – is doing everything possible to stop anyone you see it.

The Cove is run by Louie Psihoyos and produced by Paula Dupre Pesman and Fisher Stevens. The film was written by Mark Monroe. The Jim Clark is executive producer and co-producer is Olivia Ahnemann.
