The Betrayal by Technology: A Portrait of Jacques Ellul
The Technological Society was a book which when published in English made Jacques Ellul, a French theologian/sociologist and anarchist, famous among the American readers.
This book critically assessed technique, a term that means more than merely gadgets and machines, similar to the way the English word ‘technology’ means.
Ellul thought of technique as a way of life exemplified by ethical decisions being undermined by efficiency. All aspects of modern life were being drastically and negatively influenced by technique, Ellul warned.
He mutually reinforced his political and religious thoughts by citing examples in his two books, Anarchy and Christianity and The Politics of God and the Politics of Man. Ellul’s work on technique has been regarded by many Green Anarchists as having influenced their thought processes.
