Religulous
Religulous

997 Views 0 Comments 01:41:00

At the beginning of Religulous, Bill Maher shows a bar graph illustrating the number of people in America who are not religious. That figure is 16% more than blacks, more than Jews, more numerous other minority groups who seem to have no problem making themselves heard and getting Congress to do his bidding. Maher wonders aloud why non-religious people are so underground, and why they are having an impact on the national debate. His film is aimed directly at that 16% of the country, and almost anyone else. His goal, and it clearly has one, is to give people the motivation they need to come out and do something … before it is too late.Religulous begins with Bill Maher, alone in Israel at a place called Megiddo, a useless pile of rubble that many of the world’s religions believe the end of the world will begin. From there, Maher pushes us to an intense discussion, sincere, funny and brutal of blind belief, presenting the possibility that maybe we should all consider doubt instead. Next in the world, as it travels from place to talk with people of different faiths on different continents. What is surprising is that even though Maher definitely has an agenda, does not distort his film in the field of propaganda. It is not propaganda, because Maher is not exhausted and the search for rare birds for use in smear tactics against the devout. Usually anyone who tries to make a case against God goes right to the pedophile priests and the suicide bombers, but Maher makes it a focal point in normal people, religious reasonably correct. Not stack the deck in your favor, do not need it. He talks to truckers in a chapel of the road, talking with random, middle class tourists in an amusement park of Christian themes. He talks to religious shop owners, small town preachers, televangelists, Jews for Jesus, fundamentalist U.S. Senators, Vatican priests, religious scientists, secular Muslims, Muslims, gays, people in United States, Utah (c’mon, we all know that is not really America), Europe and even in Jerusalem. Despite a clumsy excuse to discredit him may claim otherwise, it is not extremists or lunatics. These are mostly healthy, rational people, even intelligent to believe something which Maher believes is insane.

What are we celebrating when we carve out Jack-o-Lanterns and encourage our youth to go out in costumes and ask for candy from strangers? This documentary shows us the ghoulish past and transformation of one of our oldest holidays still celebrated.Originating back in Ireland thousands of years ago during Celtic times. The origins of Halloween are very spiritual and are connected to harvest times, Druid priests and the supernatural and the dead coming to life. The Celts offered blood sacrifices to appease the gods and animals were thrown onto huge bonfires and used remains to develop prophesies. There is still the fear of the unknown and this documentary seeks to give some insight into the origins and history.Ancient Romans had a role in shaping the Halloween we have come to know…honouring the dead and the harvest.Christianity changed things somewhat and Pagans and Christianity come into conflict with the Christians attacking the Pagan traditions. Guy Fawkes night celebrates the attack by the catholic rebel upon the protestant parliament. The origins of traditional Halloween and even witch craft etc are explored and eventually all the evil deeds are replaced by fun event with children taking over the festivities from adults. The prominence of Irish immigrants brought Halloween more to America. The USA has completely adapted what was such a pagan festival and now has Halloween Parades which were introduced to attemt to thwart the mischief and vandalism which started to develop. Detroit in the 1970s seen a shocking series of events when hundreds of buildings were set alight on “Devils Night” and the population became increasing fearful of each other rather than the traditional outline based upon the pagan rituals.America spends a huge fortune on Halloween making it the second largest commercial event in the calendar…adults have now again become engaged in the festivities and it remains to be seen what shape Halloween will develop into in the future.

Even secular scholars have rejected the idea of Christianity borrowing from the ancient mysteries. Respected Sir Edward Evans-Pritchard writes in Theories of Primitive Religion that “The evidence for this theory … is negligible.” “The first real parallel of a dying and rising god does not appear until the year 150, over one hundred years after the origin of Christianity. So if there is any influence of one over the other, was the influence of historical events New Testament [resurrection] on mythology, not the reverse. The only known account of a god surviving death that predates Christianity is the Egyptian cult god Osiris. In this myth, Osiris is cut into fourteen pieces, scattered around Egypt, then reassembled and brought back to life by the goddess Isis. However, Osiris does not really go back to physical life but becomes a member of a dark underworld … This is very different to the account of the resurrection of Jesus, where he was the Prince of life gloriously risen, which was seen by others on earth before his ascension to heaven. “-Dr. Norman Geisler.

This is a story of a revolution that has affected all people in the West, and almost every country in the world. It is a revolution that affects the very structure of existence – what we do to live, who we vote, we’re going to war and how we see ourselves as individuals and as nations. The series investigates the scientific, cultural, economic and political movement with the help of leading academic witnesses, and concludes that the scope of Protestantism is so profound that it is impossible to imagine the modern world without it. The series explores how the revolutionary nature of the reform shaped the world we live in today, modern art of war in Iraq. When Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the church door at Wittenberg, he unleashed a revolution in thinking and events that have both amazed and horrified him.Of modern capitalism to the nuclear family form, Protestantism has shaped the Western world in its image, and this is the dramatic story of how and why this happened. Tristan says: “Now that the traditional culture of Protestantism has fallen in the UK, which wanted to show how an elemental force that this religion has been in shaping our modern world.” Of the books we read, political parties vote, the way we live and love, the Protestant revolution continues to resonate. “As Britain struggles with its sense of national identity and the forces of evangelical Protestantism growing worldwide understanding of that faith, its meaning and legacy seems more vital than ever.”

This 2007 British documentary was made to try and see if Scientology was becoming more mainstream.
