At the beginning of Religulous, Bill Maher shows a bar graph illustrating the number of people in America who are not religious. That figure is 16% more than blacks, more than Jews, more numerous other minority groups who seem to have no problem making themselves heard and getting Congress to do his bidding. Maher wonders aloud why non-religious people are so underground, and why they are having an impact on the national debate. His film is aimed directly at that 16% of the country, and almost anyone else. His goal, and it clearly has one, is to give people the motivation they need to come out and do something … before it is too late.Religulous begins with Bill Maher, alone in Israel at a place called Megiddo, a useless pile of rubble that many of the world’s religions believe the end of the world will begin. From there, Maher pushes us to an intense discussion, sincere, funny and brutal of blind belief, presenting the possibility that maybe we should all consider doubt instead. Next in the world, as it travels from place to talk with people of different faiths on different continents. What is surprising is that even though Maher definitely has an agenda, does not distort his film in the field of propaganda. It is not propaganda, because Maher is not exhausted and the search for rare birds for use in smear tactics against the devout. Usually anyone who tries to make a case against God goes right to the pedophile priests and the suicide bombers, but Maher makes it a focal point in normal people, religious reasonably correct. Not stack the deck in your favor, do not need it. He talks to truckers in a chapel of the road, talking with random, middle class tourists in an amusement park of Christian themes. He talks to religious shop owners, small town preachers, televangelists, Jews for Jesus, fundamentalist U.S. Senators, Vatican priests, religious scientists, secular Muslims, Muslims, gays, people in United States, Utah (c’mon, we all know that is not really America), Europe and even in Jerusalem. Despite a clumsy excuse to discredit him may claim otherwise, it is not extremists or lunatics. These are mostly healthy, rational people, even intelligent to believe something which Maher believes is insane.

This is a very disturbing video documentary for the BBC Panorama program, by journalist John Sweeney.Last Research reporter John Sweeney’s BBC in the Church of Scientology led to an explosive confrontation church officials. This time, a special picture, one of the officials has become a complainant to help him reveal the darkest secrets of the church, with Hollywood A-listers Tom Cruise and John Travolta among its devotees. There was no drama of John Sweeney, this time, but a second look at Scientology highlighted the insidious aspects of the controversial organization. As Sweeney got into mysterious pseudo-religion L Ron Hubbard and found bullying and harassment, the group’s continued denial that it is a cult seemed laughable. This is a church called, however, much of its treatment of nonbelievers smell paranoia, particularly the revelation that the 2007 printing of Sweeney “exploding tomato” is encouraged.Flashbacks of his previous research, abused and there was no scene could reach the infamy of his red face in the form of shouting. However, the spokesman for ‘church’ ex Mike Rinder by Sweeney, the lengths to which the religion of the stars are going to discredit its critics – including dividing families – became horribly clear.

We meet five Christian families, each with a gay son or lesbian. Parents talk about their marriages and go to church, the childhood of their children and go out, their reactions and changes over time. The stories told by these nine parents and four adult children alternate with talking heads – Protestant and Jewish theologians – and with film clips of fundamentalist preachers and pundits and news clips of people in the street. They talk about the scriptures and biblical studies. A thesis of the film is that much of Christianity’s homophobia represents a misreading of scripture, a denial of science, and an embrace of quack psychology. Families call for love.

There are some who believe that Darwin's theory of evolution has weakened religion, fuelled in part by Richard Dawkins' publishing phenomenon The God Delusion. Conor Cunningham argues that nothing could be further from the truth.Cunningham is a firm believer in the theory of evolution, but he is also a Christian. He believes that the clash between Darwin and God has been hijacked by extremists - fundamentalist believers who reject evolution on one side, and fundamentalist atheists on the other. Cunningham attempts to overturn what he believes are widely held but mistaken assumptions in the debate between religion and evolution. He travels to the Middle East where he shows that from the very outset, Christianity warned against literal readings of the biblical story of creation. In Britain, he reveals that, at the time, Darwin's theory of evolution was welcomed by the Anglican and Catholic Churches. Instead, he argues that the conflict between Darwin and God was manufactured by American creationists in the 20th century for reasons that had very little to do with science and religion and a great deal to do with politics and morality. Finally, he comes face to face with some of the most eminent evolutionary biologists, geneticists and philosophers of our time to examine whether the very latest advances in evolutionary theory do in fact kill God.

This great lecture summarizes scientific research that explains why humans have an inclination to create divinity. It is not a defense of atheism, but rather shows what science says about the various modules & capabilities that humans have developed over thousands of years that lend themselves to the creation & acceptance of religious explanations.Although the presenter made clear that he is not a man of faith, the conference is not an attack on the church as much as an explanation for why people might believe. Very current and a good intro for anyone who wants to learn more about this topic.

Even secular scholars have rejected the idea of Christianity borrowing from the ancient mysteries. Respected Sir Edward Evans-Pritchard writes in Theories of Primitive Religion that “The evidence for this theory … is negligible.” “The first real parallel of a dying and rising god does not appear until the year 150, over one hundred years after the origin of Christianity. So if there is any influence of one over the other, was the influence of historical events New Testament [resurrection] on mythology, not the reverse. The only known account of a god surviving death that predates Christianity is the Egyptian cult god Osiris. In this myth, Osiris is cut into fourteen pieces, scattered around Egypt, then reassembled and brought back to life by the goddess Isis. However, Osiris does not really go back to physical life but becomes a member of a dark underworld … This is very different to the account of the resurrection of Jesus, where he was the Prince of life gloriously risen, which was seen by others on earth before his ascension to heaven. “-Dr. Norman Geisler.

In true documentary and Orwellian style, the message of an impending new world order id driven home. There is no doubt an element of sensationalism to the Zeitgeist documentary but is clearly being used for the greater good. This documentary brings together conclusively the facts and essential message of the “freedom to fascism” documentary and the “manufacturing consent” documentary. I would recommend you watch both these documentaries either before or after watching Zeitgeist the movie.
