Horizon takes us through an interesting journey of finding out some truths in this film which is divided into a series of nine parts:
Developing Drugs: The first part starts with the basic question of telling the toxic substances from the miracle drugs and introduces The GSK pharmaceutical lab that holds over 2 million nameless chemical compounds, in a bid to explain the difficulties surrounding it.
The Effects of Drugs on the Healthy: The second part shows two people discussing the outcomes of the drug Ritalin, which is prescribed to patients with ADHD, with one person actually having the condition.
The Success of Viagra: This part reveals how one of the best-selling drugs of all time came to be, while some experts are critical of the drug’s marketing.
Contraception: The fourth part depicts how women worldwide today use – and rely – on the contraceptive pill, although this wasn’t their main purpose. Meanwhile, one scientist has discovered a male contraceptive pill.
Side-Effects: The side-effects of some drugs proving fatal for a number of people taking them are explored in the fifth part.
Addiction: The sixth part explores one woman’s addiction to painkillers and the issues surrounding it, making the solution the problem.
Antibiotics: This part shows how antibiotics, though credited with increasing the lifespan of humans by nearly a decade makes the body increasingly resistant to it, which could be problematic in the future.
Statin: In the eighth part, a new drug, Statin, is shown to aid an illness or disease even before someone is diagnosed, but warns that it doesn’t come without risks.
Choosing to Die: In the last part it is shown how The Exit International group have even gone ahead trying to create a pill with the power to kill in a peaceful manner, all in a quest to become able to choose when they die.
