The term originates from the Latin word “populus” meaning populace.

The definition of the word people is a group of persons regardless of the age and gender. There are a number of synonyms for the word “people” and some of them are human beings, mankind, personages, humanity and etc. Depending on the culture, tradition, kinship, language and beliefs, they can be recognized as a certain distinctive group e.g. the native people of Canada.

The definition varies and it is established within the context. For example the citizens of a country, especially when considered in relation to those who govern them are referred to as people.

Other uses of the word include the phrase “People`s republic” used in the socialist states or in the criminal law where the jurisdictions, criminal prosecutions are brought in the name of the People.
