The feature deals with the events that saw the group’s horrifying mass suicide in 1978. The film charts out Jones’ history, his childhood and his growing up in rural Indiana. The documentary consists of various accounts by witnesses. They describe Jones as a strange, charismatic young man who had a seemingly sincere desire for social justice. However, as per the account of the witnesses he murdered small animals as a child. Jones’ desire to challenged class boundaries alienated his family and neighbors .As a result of which he moved to Indianapolis. In Indianapolis he started the city’s first integrated church. Jones moved his church to California to escape the racism he perceived in Indiana. In Redwood Valley, he recruited new members for the church. Initially members had to tithe a percentage of their worth, later they had to give up their material possessions to the Temple. In 1974, Jones went to San Fransisco where he acquired some political clout before his high profile caught up with him.
Nelson for this feature interviews eyewitnesses, including many former members of the Temple, and members of Congressman Leo Ryan’s staff who managed to escape the bloodshed.
