Cosmos: A Personal Voyage
With the Cosmos, Carl Sagan and his wife and co-writer, Ann Druyan, brilliantly illustrated the underlying science of the book of the same title, placing the human within a context of space and time taken to infinity incredibly clear view. The series, which originally aired on PBS in 1980, has been seen by more than 700 million people worldwide and remains a highlight in the history of the miniseries.
Sagan explains with clarity the issues as the theory of relativity Einstein’s theory of Darwinian evolution, and the greenhouse effect, so that the mysteries of the universe to a layman’s level of understanding. The images on these remastered, DVD or VHS seven, seven sets is as fresh and exciting as it was two decades ago and is sure to fire the imagination of a whole new generation of viewers. This is the largest ever television series.
This documentary has inspired me a love of science, learning and freedom of inquiry that have shaped my two interests and intellectual curiosity. Of the hundreds of high quality science doc series published in the interim, the focus is not the majesty and depth of it. An elegant and artistic company of a well-organized, self-correction mode of reasoning and thinking about the universe / time that we occupy. After a quarter century, this series is as fascinating as it is education.

I remember watching this as a young teen on PBS. I was enthralled to say the least. Carl has a incredible way of making the science of cosmology a science easily understood by the layperson. We are but a blip in the history of the universe. Millions of years from now, we will be utterly forgotten, another civilization born, exist, and dissapear. It makes you feel a bit insignificant.
Yea we don’t have a cold war, just terrorism, and countries trying to gain nukes. (Iran) If they do get a nuke, the prelude to ww3 will begin. I hope I am not around when this happens. Even if this does not happen, the growing oil shortage in the future will set off another conflict as the oil hungry nations fight over a dwindling supply of the almighty barrel of oil.
A few hundreds, maybe thousands of year further down the road of human history, I believe future humans, should we survive ourselves, will rename the Sun, and our star system after the late great Carl Sagan, to honor the man who arguably set us forth onto our journey into the great infinite of space… Thank you, Carl… We miss you!
Honestly, I was waiting for that too. Some of what was lost (when the library at Alexandria was destroyed) has come to the West via texts that had been translated from their original Greek to Arabic; then, centuries later, retranslated from Arabic into Latin.Sadly, the lamps of the Golden Age were extinguished, much as the lamps of Europe had been, by the flood of religion. As Omar (*allegedly*) said: “Books that agree with al-Qur’an are unnecessary; books that oppose it are to be destroyed.”
It`s mind blowing stuff. I know many, if not most, scientists don`t believe there is God. Most find the Universe incredible and beautiful enough. Which is only right. But if there is a being that created all this ? And I only ask `if ?` Talk about weeping in the presence of Beauty.
This man has made such a huge difference just by sharing his thoughts. Very few humans have accomplished this without inventing something. The effects of his words will ripple throughout time and will indirectly change this planet for hundreds of years.
Thank you Carl for this wanderful episodes. They were a great inspiration to me since I have seen them some decades ago. I am so sorry that you left this world before there were answers to some of greates questions. Unfortunatly future of this world and mankind seems worse now than it was in 70-ies.
” I have never seen such a STUPID and nonesensical film.”You are a despicable human being in your callousness. Let me practice that method for a sec…. What should I expect from someone whose recent ancestors lived in grass huts and ate each other. Oh!!!,… too soon?
Such a great film. It is incredible how we human can do the best for ourselves, making use of the power of our intelligence, and also the worst, because intelligence is that, just a great tool to success or fail. I envy all that brain-privileged people who made sense of the history of cosmos, and wish more people were like them in order to avoid many troubles on this world. The film also has a very good quality in spite of the time it was created. Thanks for uploading it.
Me encanta.Espero con ansias al “nuevo” Sagan que combata al error de las supersticiones con la luz del conocimiento. y tu Ann … estarĂas dispuesta?… saludos !!!I love it.I look forward to the “new” Sagan to combat the error of superstition with the light of knowledge. and you Ann? … would be willing … Greetings! -google translator-
watched this when i was just a kidfrom then til now it opened my mind to thoughts and possibilities of how and why our universe is so vast and varied that my mind could never again think in any type of blinkered or dogmatic way.Carl Sagan you are a genius, a visionary, and an inspiration.
Hey, thanks for the playlist. And thanks to COSMOS or whoever for not taking it down. The last month I watched all 13 episodes in the morning after work. I even wrote Ms. Ann Druyan and she responded. It was awesome. From biggest smiles to tears, Dr. Sagan is definitely one of my favorites, I can’t wait to read the COSMOS book I have, as well as his others. If you guys haven’t ever read it, check out COMET…super badass.
Every generation has its popular culture and I’m sure twenty year ago tweenage bimbos would be all over Jersey Shore too. Besides let’s not forget that Snooki’s name is on the tabloids when the Carl Sagan’s documentaries are collecting dust in the corner of a library.
should i get a star because i have no idea who the SFHTGDTAGfrNJ is? Couldn’t agree with you more, the world should require that every citizen grow up learning the ideas put forth by teachers (because that’s what they most loved, sharing the science) like Feynmann and Sagan
they are your heroes, but the heroes whom you personally and consciously chose to be your heroes, not the heroes whom the media force people to believe they’re “heroes” only because the media call them “heroes”. NO, the media “heroes” are NOT my heroes either. i agree with you; the great individuals you named are my heroes too. there are other great individuals in history too. but the fact remains that the majority of world population have always been not-important, only a few.
This is an educational video, made to enlighten people on the universe outside of our world. Taking this video down would be a terrible decision, and I honestly doubt that it’ll happen. With that said, thanks for uploading this video. It’s great.
Check this out!! I was watching the last episode of this with Spanish subtitles (!me encanta espan~ol! Yo tuve que hacerlo! Ha sido muy genial!) and I let it run to the end, letting the playlist whip back to the first episode, and the subtitles came on in English, and I noticed that a lot of Anne Druyan’s words were mis-written as homonyms. It’s kind of funny! Jajajaja! But now… I wonder, how good are the SPANISH subtitles? O_o Are they based on the ENGLISH subtitles?THE HORROR.
@Oracle13 It is sadening, but their window of opportunity, jersey shore/kardashian, dies out as soon as the next thing comes along. Whereas Sagan, who made an impact on people’s lives, get’s resurrected and remade, by Neil Degrasse Tyson/Seth McFarlane, and more people check out his work, and he continues. A good example for you…can you remember where the 4th surviror series was held? Or the 5th real world? Jersey Shore will be forgotten because the next Jersey Shore will hog the spotlight
I’ve heard about this man for a while now and haven’t heard him speak. I’m very excited for this. Just packed a healthy sized bowl and sprinkled some kief on top. Now time to blast off and let Carl Sagan’s wisdom blow me away…
It saddens me terribly that even in our day and age more people would rather cling to the notion that we are born wretched, sinful, and yet so self-important as to be the center of all things in a universe and world only 6,000 years old…Rather than embrace the full immensity and infinitely more awe-inspiring, TRULY humbling beauty and majesty that IS the universe in proper…and that IS Carl Sagan’s Cosmos!obiwanobiwan13 1 second ago
