After Rome: Holy War And Conquest
In the first episode of this two-part series, Boris Johnson traveled to France, Spain, Egypt, Israel, Syria and Turkey to investigate the beginnings of what some now call “the clash of civilizations.” This is the idea that the two historically opposed religious cultures of Christianity and Islam are locked in an endless cycle of mutual distrust and dislike violence. There have been many “battles” between Christianity and Islam in the period examined Boris Johnson in this series, 632 1492. But the real historical picture is much more subtle, interesting and optimistic that the clichés of a clash of civilizations would suggest. This program looks first in the early history of Islam, the extraordinary series of conquests that won for him half the territories of the former Roman Empire only 80 years old, rich and sophisticated civilization Islam produced; relations between Muslims, Jews and Christians, and the history of the Crusades.
In the second part, Boris Johnson, a trip to France, Spain, Egypt, Israel, Syria and Turkey to continue his research on the beginnings of what some now call “the clash of civilizations.” It begins with an examination of the Crusades, and the way you see in the West and the Muslim world today. But Boris discovers the reality of the Crusades are much more subtle than the modern attitudes that they would have us believe.
As with many current positions entrenched on the so-called “clash of civilizations’, such attitudes are often a rewriting of history in the light of subsequent events. In this program, Boris Johnson, is also seen in the sack of Constantinople, when American Christians fought Eastern Christians, eventually leading to the fall of the city to the Ottoman Turks in 1453. It is also seen in the Reconquest of Spain, which culminated in the mass expulsion of Jews and Muslims. At every step of their journey, Boris Johnson estimates that the real story is much more subtle and interesting than the fictions that have grown around it.
